NexPoint Credit Strategies Fund Announces Regular Monthly Dividend and Amendment to its Dividend Reinvestment Plan

By March 2, 2016March 3rd, 2016Press Releases

DALLAS, March 2, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — NexPoint Credit Strategies Fund (“NHF” or the “Fund”) (NYSE: NHF) today announced its regular monthly dividend on its common stock of $.24 per share. The dividend will be payable on March 31, 2016 to shareholders of record at the close of business March 24, 2016.

In addition, the Fund has amended and restated its dividend reinvestment plan (“DRIP”), which was approved by its Board of Trustees on February 19, 2016, and will take effect on March 2, 2016. Under the amended DRIP, distributions to shareholders (other than shareholders who have affirmatively elected not to participate in the DRIP) will be reinvested in newly issued shares of the Fund based upon the share price at the close of regular trading on NYSE on the date the dividend is paid, regardless of whether the Fund is trading at a premium or discount to net asset value (“NAV”).  Shareholders who elect not to participate in the plan will receive their distributions in cash.

The Fund is a closed-end fund managed by NexPoint Advisors, L.P. (the “Adviser”), an affiliate of Highland Capital Management, L.P. The Fund invests primarily in below investment grade debt and equity and has the ability to hedge risk. The Adviser attempts to deliver consistent returns in excess of the Dow Jones Credit Suisse Hedge Fund and the HFRX Global Hedge Fund indices in a transparent, registered fund format with consistent monthly dividends.

Historically, for shareholders participating in the DRIP, American Stock Transfer & Trust Company, LLC (the “Plan Agent”) used cash dividends to purchase shares of NHF in the secondary market when the price of NHF’s shares, plus estimated brokerage commissions, was less than NAV, or distributed newly issued common shares when the price of NHF’s shares, plus estimated brokerage commissions, was equal to or greater than NAV.  Under the amended DRIP, the Plan Agent will issue new shares of NHF (rather than purchasing shares in the secondary market), regardless of whether NHF is trading at a premium or a discount.

Fund Earnings

In 2014, the Manager recommended, and the board approved, two dividend increases totaling 20%. The increases were driven by increased earnings on portfolio positions. Prior to recommending increases in the dividend to the board, the Manager carefully analyzed each position in the Fund and its long-term earning potential as well as the Fund’s expense run rate. While no assurance can be given as to the future level of dividends, the Manager believes NHF can continue to pay the $.24 per share dividend for the remainder of 2016 based on the following annualized projected earnings rate analysis as of February 29, 2016, excluding any one-time income and expense items:

Interest Rate Risk. Interest rate risk is the risk that debt securities, and the Fund’s net assets, may decline in value because of changes in interest rates. Generally, fixed rate debt securities will decrease in value when interest rates rise and increase in value when interest rates decline.

Leverage Risk. The Fund uses leverage through borrowings from notes and a credit facility, and may also use leverage through the issuances of preferred shares. The use of leverage magnifies both the favorable and unfavorable effects of price movements in the investments made by the Fund. Insofar as the Fund employs leverage in its investment operations, the Fund will be subject to substantial risks of loss.

Credit Risk. Investments rated below investment grade are commonly referred to as high-yield, high risk or “junk debt.” They are regarded as predominantly speculative with respect to the issuing company’s continuing ability to meet principal and/ or interest payments.

Illiquidity of Investments Risk. The investments made by the Fund may be illiquid, and consequently the Fund may not be able to sell such investments at prices that reflect the Investment Adviser’s assessment of their value or the amount originally paid for such investments by the Fund.
